Since 2023, Catch Your Breath have been on the rise. Their online streams have soared, their fanbase has grown and their touring schedule has been packed with big names, from Ice Nine Kills to Breaking Benjamin.
Now, the four-piece from Austin, Texas, are taking things to the next level with their second album, Not Broken Enough. Exploring themes of love, loss and toxic relationships, the metal-infused rock band are releasing their most vulnerable material to date.
Album opener ‘Contaminated’ is a slow burn, but it builds momentum nicely, leading to a soaring crescendo that gives listeners an early taste of the sheer scale that Catch Your Breath can achieve.
The magnitude of this album continues with huge tracks including ‘Blood Money’, which blends the dual soft-and-raw vocals of the post-hardcore movement with the melodic riffs of heavy rock bands from the noughties, like Three Days Grace and Bullet For My Valentine.
Tracks like ‘Carnivore’ and ‘Red Alert’ are further proof of what this band is capable of. There’s a fresher, more modern tone to ‘Carnivore’ as it chops and changes between big, sweeping choruses, synth-influenced instrumentals and a sharp, snappy bridge that switches up the tempo, while ‘Red Alert’ brings a sexy, charged energy, married with the tense story of a predator stalking their prey.
Beyond the musicality, which has a taste of everything from nu-metal to alt-rock and metalcore, this album is woven together by stories of heartache and inner demons, going to those deep, dark places that many wouldn’t dare to venture.
With the album’s lead single, ‘Control’, we follow someone being consumed by heartbreak who is under the thumb of a former lover but, despite the pain, they just can’t let them go. It’s a familiar story for anyone who has struggled to break free of a turbulent relationship, and those emotions are felt through guttural screams that really emphasise anguish and despair.
‘Rewind’ brings a more melancholy, reflective tone that comes after losing someone you love, while ‘Lost’ is one for the sensitive souls who feel things deeply, with the storyteller wearing their heart on their sleeve and basically saying: “Hey, I know you hurt me, but I can’t let you go and I’m lost without you.”
At its core, Not Broken Enough is a break-up album. Fans who are in the midst of their own relationship woes will be able to relate to the stories told here, but there’s so much more to enjoy about the 11-track record.
If you’re into big, weighty breakdowns, pulsing drum beats and vocals that switch between monstrous roars and soulful melodies, there’s plenty for you to sink your teeth into, even if you’re not in the throes of an emotional meltdown.
The album ends on ‘Hollow Dreams’, which is all about healing from your scars. Even though there’s still a long road ahead for the afflicted, it feels like we might be ready to close this chapter and move onto the next. It’s almost a positive message to end on, but don’t get too excited – you’ll probably still be in tears by the final note.
