Static Dress – Injury Episode
Release Date: 29th May 2026
Label: Sumerian Records
Following their 2022 release Rouge Carpet Disaster, Static Dress have made their return to the scene four years later with their new album Injury Episode: fifteen songs that are delicately crafted together, and yet so beautiful individually, hurling us all back to peak 2000’s hardcore music.
As soon as you press play, you’re immersed in the ASMR echo chamber that is ‘lose the rain’, diving back to ‘cubicle dialogue’ outro from previous album Rouge Carpet Disaster with vocalist Olli Appleyard’s scattered whispers of “I’m so close to being free, why would I stop now?”. This cuts into the first unsettling guitar riff of ‘questioning;’ a heavy-hitting first song with all you could ask of post-hardcore. Appleyard’s vocals and guitarist George Holding’s screams work in tandem to create a beautifully complex song of raw emotion, laced with soothing harmonies, haunting ear-splitting screams and lyricism that cuts deep.
There are a plethora of hard-hitters to be digested within this album, including ‘Pharmacy Film’ with its punchy guitar, distorted screams, and drum snippets that are reminiscent of ‘Eyeless’ by Slipknot.
Exuding pure rage, ‘Male Bom’ is a compilation of deafening vocal screams, Vincent Weight’s urgent guitar riffs, Sam Ogden flawlessly matching the energy on drums, and a filthy breakdown that leaves you reeling. ‘Nostalgia Kills’ is a jumpscare to the ears after the soothing outro of ‘Adapter,’ with its instant barrage of noise before Static Dress and Underoath deliver a love letter to the 2000’s hardcore scene. Then there’s ‘Classic.Death.Pose.’: a carefully constructed mess of shrill and guttural screams, gritty guitar, and Ogden’s drumming as the glue keeping it together building up to a flawless half-time outro.
Within the heavy, Injury Episode also provides some softer sounds for those late night listens. ‘…hospice’ is a gut-wrenching emo ballad with softer instrumentation and vocals, and a cleverly minimal use of vocal screams driving power behind gut-wrenching lyrics “Postcard from the ICU. A promise to come visit soon”. ‘Adult Diamond’ is a meticulously crafted story starting out with a stripped back acoustic sound, soft harmony, an abundance of high-hats and subtle synth usage sprinkled in the pre-chorus to ease us into the song’s mind, the perfect 4am listen. The initial chorus lyrics “I see you sleep. Back of my mind.” Is the precursor to a dreamland of loneliness and longing constructed of washy vocals and melancholic synths that could be mistaken for an unreleased My Bloody Valentine track.
Static Dress have delivered a timeless album, pathing the way for future elder emos that will reminisce growing up with their music.
