Advents – Chroma
Release Date: 5th January 2024
Fans of bands like Bad Omens and the like should be very excited about the proposition of Advents. Combining old school metalcore with modern electronic beats as well as some beautiful vocals with deep growls interspersed in there too. ‘Chroma’ is a track that will wow audiences, especially in the setting where this track is going to go HUGE.
Make sure you check out our chat with Joe from the band once you’ve hit play on this video:
Heya Joe, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today! For those living under a rock, can you tell us a bit about yourselves as a band?
Joe Koza: Thanks for having us! We’re a metal band based in and around NYC that can most easily be defined as metalcore but combines a ton of different influences, to be honest. We’ve been putting out music for just over 2 years now.
You’ve just released new music, can you tell us a little about it and what it means to you?
Sure, we just released our sophomore EP, PERSONA MELODIES. It’s a collection of songs that delve into a lot of topics and concepts surrounding identity, struggle, and life as a whole – mental health, relationships – all of that type of stuff. Some of the songs are very personal to specific members of the band. Musically, it’s what we would want to hear as a listener looking for new music in this genre – familiar, but hopefully refreshing.
Do you have a favourite track on there or is it like picking your favourite dog breed?
Hmm, all of us in the band would probably have a different answer here. For me, it’s tough because ‘Red Thirteen’ is “my” song on the EP – the subject matter is very personal. So I’d have to go with that one, or maybe ‘Chroma’. But again, ask any of us, and the answer will probably be different.
Can you give us an insight into how you write tracks and has this changed as you’ve become more comfortable working together?
Yeah, we have been working very closely with our producers, Jonathan Dolese and Randy Pasquarella, on the recent tracks. The process is very organic and only becomes more comfortable with time. We start instrumentally and then develop the ideas for the melodies and how the songs should flow. (Anthony) Spizz, our vocalist, is responsible for the vast majority of the initial ideas that we run with. From there, he and I will usually sit down and write and revise, over and over again until it’s what we want it to be. Then, we’ll bring it to the guys and talk about it some more. But the back and forth of it has been very healthy and seems to work best for us.
What was the original inspiration for you wanting to get into music and is the current style where you thought you would head?
The first time I saw Metallica, I remember thinking to myself, “How do I make that happen?”. I haven’t formed the next Metallica yet (if there will ever even be another), but I’ve done some things that I like to feel my younger self would think are pretty cool. In terms of music, I’ve always been very inspired by many different styles. When it comes to metal, I have said before that if you told me I’d be in a metalcore band when I was like 14, I’d probably laugh. I liked some of the bands in the scene at that time, but if I was listening to heavy music, it usually wasn’t core. That was kind of against the rules in my world. It’s kind of funny how that sort of thing can change over time.
Do you have any upcoming plans you’re excited about?
We have a bunch of new music in the works, so we’re just excited to keep pushing and doing what we do. We hope to be able to plan some more live shows soon, too.
What’s the ultimate goal for the band? Headlining major festivals, playing a certain venue or just having as much fun as you can?
Ultimately, I’d say bringing this band on the road and making it sustainable in the long run is the biggest goal for Advents. We love doing this and have a lot of ideas, so continuing to make music and reaching people around the world is the top priority. On a personal level, my bucket list venue is Madison Square Garden, in any capacity. That’d be pretty cool and full circle for me.
Outside of the day-to-day band life, what gets you up in the morning?
My family and friends, music, the gym, and that new coffee machine they put in 7-Eleven where you can make yourself any size espresso drink for like $2.
Finally, are there any bands that you’d like to give a shout-out to?
There’s a lot. Off the top of my head, let’s go with Afterglow, If I Were You, Deadlands, Hallow Sanctum, and Desolate.
Thanks for your time! Is there anything you’d like to say or promote while you’re here?
Thank you for having us! Check out the EP and our new single, ‘Chroma’. We put a lot of work into this one and Spizz put a ton of work into directing the video for ‘Chroma’ and editing everything himself. DIY, baby.
