Atmospheric, crunching and elevating, REZN’s Cycle In The Infinite Dream is a kaleidoscopic listen. With a genre hopping sound, incorporating doom, prog and stoner metal the Chicagoan add to an already impressive catalogue. Each note placed with purpose REZN creates an experience that transcends beyond the sonic. Cycle In The Infinite Dream is full of imagery that evokes ambience and wonder with textures woven in from synthesised soundscapes and rumbling bass and guitar riffs. If any album should come with the instruction “Listen With Your Eyes Closed”, it would be this one.
‘Rites of Passage’ is a tone setting opener. Rob McWilliams’ vocals float as if a vapour between the deep set riffs and a crashing rhythm section, opening for an audio-visual journey led by REZN and created within the listener’s mind. Adding to the interdimensional scope of the album Spencer Oullette’s lap steel, saxophone and synthesiser enhances the atmospheric feeling of the album, adding layers beyond the hard-hitting metal riffs, best reflected in the lead single ‘Cloudfall’ and ‘Transient’.
The prolific Chicago metal band, on their eighth album release, demonstrate a mastery of their unique approach to composing and fail to be penned to one genre, Cycle In The Infinite Dream is a dynamic album that can be appreciated on a variety of levels. It occupies a space that is both tranquil and psychedelic in ‘Devotion’ before crashing into ‘The Vessel’, creating a sense of disruption and urgency. McWilliams’ lyrics is an exploration of the “subconscious state” as the band journeys through the concept of a “pseudo-waking state”, or, “second existence”. McWilliams’ lofty vocals stand apart and lead the album and evoking a weightless feel to each song they feature, becoming a vessel for the voyage REZN takes the listener on.
This album provides a cosmic exploration of the dream state. The musicianship on display is both captivating and mesmerising, immersing the listener in a flow state. Time feels like it stops altogether as the album calls you onto a cloud and guides you. REZN have produced an album that carries and soars between realms conceptually and sonically. Highlights, ‘Rites of Passage’, ‘The Vessel’ and ‘Primal Thread’ stand out as individual compositions. However, the album requires and deserves a front to back listen. To pull out individual songs would be a disservice to an impeccable album that marks an esoteric chapter in REZN’s creative story.
