There are far too many bands in the contemporary UK rock scene that sound too nice, look too nice, and are devoid of any personality for a snobby punk kid like me to actually grip on to. While Leamington Spa six-piece TrueHeights may be a name beginning to rumble in the underground, the question I’ve got is, do people like me actually care?
Anthemic, accessible radio rock isn’t usually a style I typically go for, but I’ll hold my hands up and admit that TrueHeights are at least a band that do things right. With the release of their debut EP TH15 in 2015, they started their careers with quality production and slick levels of professionalism to boot. For that I admire them, and since I consider myself a fan of some bands within the genre (Don Broco, Lower Than Atlantis), I was happy enough to give their second EP Days We Found a shot.
Throwing my cards on the table, opening track ‘Exit Route’ is potentially a bigger and better sounding single than anything the likes of You Me At Six and Deaf Havana have released in the best part of half a decade. Here I am, someone that usually holds his middle finger up to this type of stuff, admitting that the EP opens with an arena sized anthem and a chorus worth going back to time and time again.
The brilliant vocal delivery of Zakk Poland is certainly the first element that jumped out at me. However, it’s the bite in the guitar work that sold me on the EP’s opening track, followed by another solid number in ‘Catalyst’. There’s some crunch in there, not too much to deter the mainstream rock audience, but enough meat on the bone for people who like it heavier to stay fully engaged.
The chorus of ‘we’re not kids anymore’ in ‘No Tomorrow’ is a simplistic yet unavoidable earworm, and at three tracks in I began to be won over by TrueHeights. To my disappointment, the EP’s last two tracks ‘Maybe’ and ‘Still Moving Colour’ are where it begins to lose me a little. They certainly make for decent background music, but it seems clear the band are settling on an idea and a concept to stick to, leaving very little towards the end for me to scream and shout about.
Although I didn’t find myself connecting with any of the lyrics, Days We Found is certainly an EP that’s polished, catchy, and bound to launch their names to a bigger market. Short and sweet, but that’s all I’ll ever need it to be.
Based on the downwards trajectory Days We Found took, I’m unsure as to whether TrueHeights are experienced enough to variate their sound and maintain my engagement for a full length record. However, what they have crafted is a solid foundation to continue building their growing reputation. Even for those who sit firmly on the heavier side of the musical fence, ‘Exit Route’ alone makes this release well worth your attention.
