Release Date: 15th September 2017

Label: Self-Released

Close To Call hail from all around the UK, and have set base in Guildford while at uni. Their sound is an amalgamation of the classic pop-punk bands with a hint of modern influence, and it gives off this nostalgic vibe of Warped Tour, skateboarding and DIY pop-punk of the 90s.

The first song, ‘Deadweight Mistakes’, doesn’t fail with this nostalgic vibe. The verses seem inspired from Blink-182, but the song really gets going with its really catchy chorus that I found myself mouthing to after only a few listens. There’s also a great guitar riff towards the end of the song, and some good layering of voices during the chorus.

The next song ‘Someday’ starts with this really good instrumental that could easily be from a famous pop-punk band. The song has both DIY and produced sounds – from the raw, unedited vocals to the impressive instrumental, and I really like it!

Moving on to their first single, ‘Time To Waste’, has a fast paced beat that sticks throughout the song, and reminds me a lot of early Blink songs, especially during the chorus. If done poorly, it could have been a mess, but it works with this song! There’s also some more 90s inspiration and shoutable lyrics, so you can tell why they made this the single!

‘Down So Easy’ starts with a slower paces intro, that reminds me a bit of Neck Deep’s ‘In Bloom’. There’s a good guitar rhythm that plays throughout the song, and it once again contains song well done lyrical layers. My only criticism of the song is that the drums seem to fast during the breakdown near the end of the song, but the rest of the song is pretty solid.

The final song, ‘Weight of the World’ is the most modern-sounding of the EP. It has a good guitar solo and first verse, but the chorus is a bit mixed. I like the pacing and the instrumentals, but the vocals seem a bit off, but for a band’s first EP, this is expected! That being said, it’s still a great chorus to finish a respectable EP!
