The Cadillac Three – Legacy
Release Date: 25th August 2017
Label: Big Machine Records
After making the UK their 2nd home over the past few years it feels like The Cadillac Three are starting to look a little more towards their Star Spangled Banner homeland. There isn’t much different on show here other than it’s all a bit slower and a bit more…Country for want of a better description. As always there’s plenty of Southern style rock and plenty of references to whiskey, family and locations that feel more exotic to us Brits than they probably are.
From the opening of ‘Cadillacin” it has that oh so familiar TC3 style just a little bit taken off. If you’ve seen the boys live recently this won’t be much of a surprise as they seem to thrive on slowing everything down, winding it back and letting everyone enjoy the experience. ‘Tennessee’ follows suit nicely and from there the journey into Country truly begins. ‘Dang If We Didn’t’ sounds like it could be on any rock radio station across the whole of the US, it’s just a damn shame that rock radio doesn’t really exist in the UK.
‘Ain’t That Country’ pretty much encapsulates the entire essence of Country. Lines like ‘there’s always a little more month at the end of the money’ is the kind of dark, working class observation that makes Country so popular across the pond and increasingly popular over here.
By the time ‘American Slang’ comes along it’s basically time to whip out your check shirts, trucker hats and bottle of bourbon and ‘Take Me To The Bottom’ cements that. Across the whole album the level of musicianship is high, but it’s the vocals that really set this apart. The emotion and range Jaren puts across set the bar higher than they have at any point in their short career to date.
This album is The Cadillac Three as you know them, but different enough that you know they’re evolving. Legacy is what it sounds like, it’s a tribute to what they band grew up with, but more than that, it’s a sign of intent of what they’ve got to come.
