SQPR - artworkSPQR – The House That Doubt Built

Release Date: 10th November 2017

Label: Loner Noise

SPQR, an alternative rock three piece from Liverpool, have released their debut EP through Loner Noise.

The EP kicks off with Or So I Say, a tune starting us off with some strong vocals and soft instrumentals. The pace of this track fastens and picks up with a catchy beat, before slowing again towards the end.

Track 2, Suffer, released on the group’s Bandcamp before the rest of the EP, sets off with a rhythmic drum beat, before moving on with a combination of guitar and bass. Throughout the continuous beat, we are graced with a nice guitar riff and possibly some slight country undertones. The song comes to a close with an added dramatic effect of spoken vocals.

Life Would Be Easy is the third track on the EP, and begins with a vocal intro soon followed by a short instrumental break leading us into an upbeat tune which lasts throughout the song. This tune reaches an end with soft vocals before eventually drowning out.

Track 4, Whatever Weather, sets off with a gentle intro, starting us off slow, before leading into a mix of a guitar riff and lead/backing vocals. This song gets heavier as it heads towards the end, before coming to a close and leading into the next track.

The fifth and final track of the EP, Dystopia starts off softly, and remains slow and almost emotional throughout. Played on piano, this is a calming song and one perfect to finish off an EP.

Overall, this is a great EP that offers a range with its contents, certain songs being perfect ones to have a sing-song to, and others being ones to have a good cry to. Certain aspects of this EP could definitely be compared to the work of The Strokes or Echo and The Bunnymen. SPQR have shown their talent in this debut EP, leaving any listener excited about what we could expect from this band in the future.

Recommended Track: Whatever Weather

Rating: 8/10
