Album Review: Skarlett Riot – Regenerate

Skarlett Riot – RegenerateSkarlett Riot - Regenerate FINAL hi res cover

Release Date: 27th October 2017

Label: Despotz Records

The UK based band has come forward and released their second album Regenerate a short while after releasing their EP Sentience. This time they are back darker, heavier and faster.

The album kicks off with the song Break which has an eerie introduction before kicking off with some killer guitars. There is a solid bass throughout the song giving it depth. Skarlett’s voice has a dark undertone during the beginning of the song before coming into the chorus where the aggression starts to show through. An overall amazing song with a great catchy chorus which will be playing in the listeners heads for a while. As the album goes on we reach track 3 – Stand Alone which starts off with a strong drum introduction which is accompanied by a little guitar before coming in full pelt with a heavy riff. This is then accompanied with Skarlett’s powerful vocals and lyrics that portray her anger throughout the song.

At track 6 – Affliction which starts off heavy but then the guitars, bass and drums retreat and are replaced by a piano and we are shown a softer side of Skarlett’s voice, however this isn’t for long because shortly after the guitars, bass and drums are back and the passion is even stronger from all parties of the band. Track 8 – Paralyzed is the heaviest song of the whole album, it is also more focused on the guitars and drums. The need to head bang is felt throughout the whole course of the song significantly more than before. Backing vocals by Danny and Martin are a lot more significant in this song in particular compared to the rest of the album. Track 10 – Warrior has a strong message throughout, the song finishes the album on a high. The lyrics talk about being strong and powerful which is not portrayed much in the beginning of the album. This links the album together and links to the album name Regenerate as we have seen lyrics goes from being angry and weak to angry and powerful therefore they have ‘regenerated’ which is a smart link. The song is heavy throughout and rounds off with a solid bit of guitar and drums before having an abrupt ending.

Overall a great album with some amazing riffs and powerful vocals, however it has a slightly repetitive tone through majority of the songs. The band has elements of In This Moment, Asking Alexandria and New Years Day with some guitar riffs similar to ones of Bury Tomorrow and The Amity Affliction. There are definitely some strong influences on this band however they have a very strong style which makes them hard to get confused with any other band.
