Not all those who wander are lost, but when it comes to deathcore, you can count on a bunch of lads from the black country to navigate new hallowed ground.
Entering this third chapter since their formation in 2018, and hitting the road later this year to showcase these new tunes (and a refreshed lineup) are Wolverhampton’s very own Suffer (UK) with their latest EP Soul From Flesh.
With new vocalist Greg Hevican and guitarist Klaudiusz Trzebuniak brought into the fold, and following a bookings signing with DC Sound Attack, Suffer continue to build upon their esteemed reputation with this aggressively macabre EP, exploring introspective themes of sacrifice, transcendence and relentless burnout.
In a gruelling exploration of the cycle of retaliation, and obsession with revenge, opening single ‘Pendulum of Vengence’ as expected wastes no time in spilling its venom, decreeing a devastating harmony of fry screams and gutturals across a bed of blast beats and slam guitar lines. This track effortlessly hops from its supercharged tremolo leads to cavernous, yet bereft low-n-slow breakdowns, undoubtedly pricking the ears up of any death metal purist.
Expanding further on the more traditional side of tech-death is ‘Self Immolation’. Flooded with atmospheric drones, plunging sub drops, and even the occasional fight riff, this track is a pummelling expedition into the “metaphorical purging needed for ascension to a higher state of being”.
Title track (and second single) ‘Soul From Flesh’ continues to amplify the groups sheer sonic brutality. Tackling themes of abandonment and imposter syndrome, this colossal onslaught showcases some of Hevican’s more visceral vocal displays, embellished with some devastatingly considered glitch/phaser post production. Our final, and by far the longest song, prevails as this EP’s magnum opus. Incorporating the most melodic and heavy hitting guitar and drum interplay seen throughout this track list so far, ‘Desolated Dreams’ shines a light on how “the relentless pursuit of achievement can cloud reality”, blending groove and black metal influences in the shapes of synth and string lines to shroud the groups deathcore foundations in this closing statement.
With help from Anthony Wall (of Firestorm Studios) and Will Cattanach (Freewill Productions) handling the recording and tone creation duties for this release, Suffer further plunge their well-sharpened axe deeper into this striking and brutal collection.
