SUM 41 – HEAVEN :X: HELL

Release Date: 29th March 2024
Rise Records

With almost 3 decades of music under their belt, Sum 41 erupts one final time with a new, double album, Heaven :x: Hell. This intense double album consists of Heaven’s side; an anthemic, pop-punk fueled reflection on the band’s last 27 years, whilst Hell’s side is a fired-up, metal onslaught designed to remind people exactly what the band are capable of. Both sides of this album come together in a pop-punk and metal-infused, yin and yang that has kept Sum 41 in the minds and hearts of the listeners for years. Each half of this album is as important as the other, bringing together the greatest aspects of Sum 41’s discography, in one final, incredible album.

Heaven’s side of the album is a beautifully crafted, pop-punk showcase. Tracks like ‘Landmines’  and ‘Dopamine’ could easily sit on any of the previous album releases (Does This Look Infected? And Underclass Hero spring to mind). This is Sum 41 at their purest with catchy guitar hooks and heartfelt lyrics that further enforce why the band are such a joy to listen to. The track ‘Bad Mistake’ is a classic, old-school pop-punk track with lyrics that demand a sing-along and guarantees to get the crowd hyped. ‘Johnny Libertine’ is Sum 41 by the way of NOFX and it captures the punk appreciation and love that the band has for these acts. ‘Radio Silence’ is one of the more melancholic and emotive tracks on this half of the album. Dripping with self-reflection, this track showcases the record’s rawness whilst bringing the album’s first half to a powerful and emotional end.

As Heaven’s side ends, Hell’s begins. The single ‘Rise Up’ is the band going out swinging with incredible drum and guitar playing that further emphasises why this band has remained as one of the greats all these years. Partnered with tracks like ‘I Don’t Need Anyone’ and ‘You Wanted War’, this half of the album refuses to let up on its intensity and aggression. On the final track, we are faced with the question ‘Why doesn’t anything good ever last’, and much like this album, nothing can last forever. For their last release, this album showcases how formidable they are in a bittersweet end to the album.

It’s clear to see the love and appreciation for what they do within this album. It has been carefully crafted for the fans to sing their heart out one last time and it shows. This album stands as one of the best releases from the band. Sum 41 are almost three decades into creating music and on this, their final release, there is no compromise or pulling punches when it comes to leaving on their own terms. This album is a testament to the band’s ability and cohesion as a musical tour de force. This might be their last album, but they make damn well sure to leave on a bang.
