The Avelons – Chit Chat
Release Date: 1st March 2024
Georgie rockers The Avelons may have been around for a few years now but their release catalogue is still looking a little bare. The addition of ‘Chit Chat’ will do much to appease those music streamers who are looking to increase their doses of the Newcastle-based band.
With a delightfully twinkly tone to it, the track brings some indie sensibilities together with a garage rock vibe, keeping everything a little bit raw. There are choruses that are begging to be sang along to, a catchy drum beat and even a fun instrumental section with a nice little solo in there too. An all-round enjoyable track that will push this promising band onwards and upwards.
Give the track a listen and then while you’re doing that why not stick around and give our chat with Aaron from the band a read:
Heya, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today! For those living under a rock, can you tell us a bit about yourselves as a band?
So hello, we’re The Avelons. I supposed we’d consider ourselves an indie/alternative rock band. Originating at a buskers night in the small North Tyneside village, Forest Hall, we have been at this music thing for a good while now. We released our debut single “The Barricades” back in December 2021, paired with our first headline gig on the same day, selling out The Globe in Newcastle. We always focus on putting on the best live shows we possibly can and believe our passion comes across best during our gigs.
You’ve just released new music, can you tell us a little about it and what it means to you?
So “Chit Chat” has been a staple in our set for a long time. We wrote it back in 2018 and has become a bit of a cult favourite with our hardcore fans. It’s really nice to finally release this track, we’ve just been waiting for the right moment, having always known it would be a single. The song itself is a telling of a suffering lover within a toxic relationship and the moment when they finally break free from the emotional clutches. A sense of euphoria within the vehicle of releif.
Can you give us an insight into how you write tracks and has this changed as you’ve become more comfortable working together?
So most of the time either me (Aaron) or frontman jack will come into rehearsals with something that we’ve been “knocking around” in our own time. Weather that’s a chord progression, a melody or even a concept, it only becomes a “song” when we’re all feeding off of eachother. Over time, I feel as though our minds have merged, some sort of telepathy where we “just know” what the song needs. In an analogy, for me, it’s like an empty shell of a house gets presented, then we all furnish it and make it a home.
What was the original inspiration for you wanting to get into music and is the current style where you thought you would head?
For me personally, I never really “got into” music. It’s something that’s been a part of me since I can remember. I really started to pay attention to music when I was around 6 years old having heard bands like Busted and Green Day and becoming a big fan of “guitar” music. Our style has certainly evolved and the writing has became more “mature” as we’ve grown up together. This has led to a heavier and darker sound which reflects where our inspirations lie, sonically.
Do you have any upcoming plans you’re excited about?
Yeah definitely. We’ve got some great gigs lined up over the next few months. We have our biggest headline show to date at The Cluny, 20th April. As well as playing “Naah Then” festival in March and “A Stones Throw” festival in May.
What’s the ultimate goal for the band? Headlining major festivals, playing a certain venue or just having as much fun as you can?
To be honest, a dream for all of us since being kids was to headline The Cluny main room as it’s a place where we saw some of our favourite artists growing up and is an iconic grassroots music venue in Newcastle. So we’re already “living the dream”. The ideal for us, and I’m sure is the same with other bands, is to get to a point where we can devote all our time to the music, replacing our 9-5s. I guess the goal for us it to reach that point but enjoy every single part of the journey to get there.
Outside of the day-to-day band life, what gets you up in the morning?
I wish I could give some really cool, artsy answer to this question but at the moment, I’m just enjoying studying music at uni. Might not be the best answer but yeah, can’t speak for the other lads though. They may have had something better to say :’).
Finally, are there any bands that you’d like to give a shout-out to?
Yeah, there’s loads of bands within the North East that are absolutely killing it at the moment. Acts like Lizzie Esau, Hannah Robinson and The Ilfords are doing the area proud and it’s lush to be alongside them in the same scene.
Thanks for your time! Is there anything you’d like to say or promote while you’re here?
