New Music Roundup – 3rd February 2024 – Part 1

TILT 360 – It Grows

Release Date: 1st February 2024

Taking inspiration from just about everyone over the past few decades, TILT 360 have elements of nu-metal and grunge, those two mortal enemies, fused into one powerful new track in the form of ‘It Grows’. The song name is an apt description of what occurs in the 215 seconds the track runs for. Opening up slowly with raw vocals before the boom occurs. Even then, things aren’t fully unleashed. Instead, they’re allowed to simmer along from verse to chorus. It isn’t until the second half of the track that the energy fully materialises and a degree of chaos is found. One of those songs that will be perfect in a grotty, dingy bar.

Papier-mâché – Hero Complex

Release Date: 6th July 2023

Music written with genuine, heartfelt meaning is often the best kind of music. Giving it a heart and soul is often important in order to build a connection between song and listener. ‘Hero Complex’ from American post-hardcore outfit Papier-mâché does its best to do exactly that. The song covers a subject that almost everyone will have experience, the loss of a loved one. From start to finish there is a raw emotion running through the track, from the signature post-hardcore style vocals to the guitars that almost overwhelm the brain. A track that is going to be massive live.

Dead Wet Things – Big Bag A’ Cans

Release Date: 26th January 2024

The north east of England is famous for a few things. Mostly people getting their shirts off at the footy. Dead Wet Things are a Sunderland based punk band that are striving to give the area another thing to shout about. ‘Big Bag A’ Cans’ is a song straight from the estates, discussing topics that are personal to themselves but relatable to probably a whole generation across the country. Mike Skinner-inspired talking through the verses is replaced in the choruses with pained shouts. A fun track, if not one packed with frustrations.

Holy Felix – Cellophane

Release Date: 26th January 2024

Rock through and through is next on the cards with Canadian artist Holy Felix, a one-man project that is combining a raspy vocal with fuzzy guitars in a true grunge style of ‘quiet-loud-quiet’. Verses draw you in close, almost as if you’re part of a conversation solely meant for you and Felix, before the choruses throws hands. The track is only the fourth released since a debut year in 2022 and it feels like the sound is being found and the style settled on with ‘Cellophane’. One for the future.

Oberst – Invisible Hands

Release Date: 25th January 2024

Norwegian hardcore-infused metal is what Oberst are striving to deliver. The track is a barrage of sound. From intense drums that never seem to relent, through powerful vocals that are as raw as they are emotional, into guitars that range from riffy to twinkly. On a track that keeps changing things up, the energy is kept consistent and the intense urge to bang one’s head is unrelenting.
