EP Review: Suicide Puppets – Beyond The Veil

Suicide Puppets – Beyond The Veil

Release Date: 13th October 2023

Bridging the gap between sporadically releasing singles and trying to force together a full album, the EP is an important tool in any band’s repertoire. Sometimes used to try something completely different (Ghost’s cover EPs for example) and sometimes just used to get some new music out there to support a tour. Here though, it’s just some kick-ass music to whet the appetite of fans. For those new to the band, Suicide Puppets are a five-piece alternative band that dabble in industrial and gothic areas and on Beyond The Veil they’ve decided to take on the persona of a serial killer.

Opening with ‘Death Note’, you can immediately get a feeling for what this band are about. Huge orchestral sounds bring about a fantasy vibe and that sticks for the next three and a half minutes. Harsh vocals combine elegantly with the guitars and one thing that is for sure, more than a decade and a half as a touring band has made these guys a tight outfit. The consistency that’s on show throughout all five tracks is something that all bands should strive towards. Whether it be ‘Everyday’ and the slightly slower, more plodding pace that it brings to the table or how ‘Sinner’ opens similarly slowly before becoming the heaviest track on the record. Across all five songs there is a clear theme in terms of style and some similarity across them, but the picture builds quickly that this is a band that will be ridiculously fun to see live with a few beers.

If you’re a fan of the more modern era Parkway Drive and like serial killers and thinking about why they do what they do, Suicide Puppets are pretty much exactly what you need in your life. Riffs, the opportunity to chant lyrics, and the excuse to get the chains out and pop some spikes on. Bliss.
