Silent By Device – Wifi in ya dolls house

Release Date: 19th December 2023

It’s a bold move nowadays for a band to come straight out of the gate with a full-length album but New Zealand band Silent By Device look to break the singles market mould with their debut album, Wifi in ya dolls house. Self-described as an “alternative, hard rock and metal band”, Silent By Device certainly tick all of the boxes, showcasing influences from past and present hard hitters in the metal genre.

Jumping straight into the opener, ‘50cc Step through’, the lads quickly laid the groundwork for what would prove to be an incredibly catchy and highly energetic debut. Keeping with their strongest foot forward, the absolute stomper that is ‘Jesusman’ takes massive influence from the likes of System Of A Down, Soil and Alice In Chains, providing an incredibly nostalgic and welcome juxtaposition to most of today’s modern metal.

As the album continues forward it does become apparent how fresh Silent By Device are as a band. There appears to be a constant shift between genres, dipping and diving between metal, hard rock and even, in some instances, half a toe in the indie and grunge camp. By three-quarters of the way through Wifi In Ya Dolls House you would be forgiven for thinking at times you are listening to an entirely different band as they try to find their footing and soundscape.

With that being said the final track on the album, ‘Mince’, comes back to the quintessential Nu Metal, 2000’s nostalgia. The seven-minute closer truly highlights the potential of the band interlacing a harsher vocal style, sludgy riffs and a certified guarantee to get heads moving.

Silent By Device shows a huge potential and Wifi In Ya Dolls House represents the making of a great band. Showcasing incredible musicianship, no lack of influence and great songwriting, the lads have a chance to go far once the growing pains are worked through and their own personal soundscape is cooked up.
