Florida based alternative and country rockers Kickstand Jenny released their most recent album Between The Lies last Summer. Recorded over the pandemic and taking influences from classic rockers such as Van Halen, Prince and Bon Jovi, which are large names to live up to, Between The Lines is a concept album discussing topics around the world we live in today.
The album kicks off with ‘Love It Or Leave It’, setting the tone for the album with consistent groove in the guitar riff and melodies. ‘Never Gonna Let You Go’ delivers the rock country ballad we needed. Speaking of nostalgia and never fully letting go, the gentle vocals paired with a moving guitar solo to fit the mood. The pace is quickly picked back up with ‘Tonight’, ‘One More Day’ and ‘Death Trap’ mid-album. With the drums really driving these tracks, mixed with familiar classic rock guitar tone, they hold beats that guarantee to get stuck in your head.
There are two features on this album, ‘Solo’ with Mark Slaughter, singer of glam metal band Slaughter, and the finishing track ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’ with Jim Riley, Rascal Flatts’ drummer. With ‘Solo’, the additional vocal adds some grit behind the messaging of ‘going solo’ and finding your own path. ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’ is a stand out on the album, with a funky riff instantly getting your feet tapping, and beaming as a country jam.
You can tell that Kickstand Jenny really thought about the themes within Between The Lies, and considered the order to place these tracks. Listeners are being told a story of emotions, decision making, dreams and love through classic country rock riffs and soulful vocals.
