If you’re searching for a new bit of rock that captures the spirit of several of the decades that have preceded the current one then London-based quartet Call To The Void are likely doing the right thing in terms of positioning themselves in there.
‘Blow’ is the band’s second single, following several months after their debut release, ‘Uncontrollable’. This new effort brings a dark, brooding intro that is reminiscent of the more DIY end of the spectrum growing through the hard rock intro with clean and clear vocals that become raspier with a much more punk edge as it progresses.
Whilst it is clear that this is a band that wants to keep things fresh, there is more than a nod to the past. Influences from the 80s through the 90s and noughties can be felt if not immediately nailed down. Something that is difficult to achieve and should be commended.
Give the track a listen and stick around for our interview with Call To The Void frontman, Jack Osborne:
Heya, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today! For those living under a rock, can you tell us a bit about yourselves as a band?
We are a four-piece Heavy Rock band from South East London in the UK. We’re trying to bring a little nostalgia to what we do whilst doing something different and original at the same time.
You’ve just released new music, can you tell us a little about it and what it means to you?
The new single is called BLOW, it’s our second release. It’s a dark, rockin’ playful tale of inner conflict. One you can definitely shake a little to on the dance floor!
Can you give us an insight into how you write tracks and has this changed as you’ve become more comfortable working together?
Generally, John our guitarist, will come to us with a riff or an idea musically, and I usually have some lyrics aside and we’ll tweak things appropriately to fit the mood of the lyrical content. However, sometimes it’s good to just all get together, jam and let the magic happen.
What was the original inspiration for you wanting to get into music and is the current style where you thought you would head?
I’d always been a music lover. My parents always played music in the family home and when driving us around … but I guess the moment I realised it was something I truly wanted to pursue was probably when I saw my first My Ruin show back in 2003, at the Garage Highbury Corner. I was 14 and it was my first gig. The electricity that night, the rawness of rock shows back then and the undeniable connection between the audience and Tairrie B Murphy, the whole night was so inspiring. In terms of our style, it’s been a journey getting to a sound that we felt was our own, we are all influenced from different genres and eras and honestly it’s still changing as we create but I feel we’re where we intended to be.
Do you have any upcoming plans you’re excited about?
We have our first show, Tuesday 9th January at The Water Rats, King’s Cross London. Very excited to debut our sound and perform it all live for everybody.
What’s the ultimate goal for the band? Headlining major festivals, playing a certain venue or just having as much fun as you can?
Honestly, we want to create, record, document every moment, play live and hope that some people out there get it. Yes it would be wonderful to play some bigger shows but let’s see what the future holds for us….
Outside of the day-to-day band life, what gets you up in the morning?
Beautiful country walks with our dog, I like to keep fit and anything else that keeps the creative flow going. Painting, writing, decorating and updating our home.
Finally, are there any bands that you’d like to give a shout-out to?
Yes for sure, shout out to my dear friends Mick and Tairrie Murphy with their new project ‘SWTEVL’ It’s a unique, exciting must listen! Also a shout out to our great friends in London ‘Straw Girl’ who we are playing with at The Water Rats next week!
Thanks for your time! Is there anything you’d like to say or promote while you’re here?
