New Music Roundup 6th January 2024

Sick Richard – Ruination

Release Date: 17th November 2023

Alt/post-rockers Sick Richard dropped their third and most recent track ‘Ruination’ towards the back end of 2023. This effort follows their debut ‘Who Do You Work For’, released in 2022, and ‘Chickens’ from early 2023 and brings more of the lighter end of rock. At least in terms of style. The subject matter isn’t light at all, questioning the very make up of our society. Whilst the track is mostly at the softer end of alt-rock, as it builds through it becomes fuzzier, and with that – heavier, as the venting grows. Like a lot of good alternative music does, the song has an agenda. Mostly that modern life isn’t all its cracked up to be and that we should really do something about it. Lyrically it feels like the random conversations you can hear down the pub…if you could afford to go. Musically it’s a catchy affair for the most part with some sombre elements dropped in there too.

Vogue Villians – Tastes Like Sin

Release Date: 5th January 2024

When you’re on a mission to prove that rock ‘n’ roll is still going strong it’s pretty important to ensure you’ve got your own house in order. Something that Vogue Villains have ensured they’ve done as they combine hard rock with punkier elements to create an alternative sound that will quickly form part of those more energetic playlists. Fans of North America rockers Billy Talent will be well at home with ‘Tastes Like Sin’, the latest track from their fellow Canadian countrymen Vogue Villains. Whilst the guitars are immediately recognisable, vocally the track has more of a groove to it…for the most part at least, as when this track builds up to heavier sections the vocals build with it too. Catchy and ferocious in equal measure, ‘Tastes Like Sin’ will get those heavy juices flowing and feels like a great way to see in the new year. Get ready to bounce along to this one!

Ffatri Jam – Gelyn

Release Date: 5th January 2024

There aren’t many Welsh language bands out there so when one pops up that goes hard it’s only right to share it. Ffatri Jam are said band and 2023 saw them take their first steps into the world of rock with ‘Gelyn’ signalling their intention through 2024. The track is pure rock, whether that’s the hard rock that drives the majority of the track or some of the alt elements that creep into the vocals. Catchy in parts, the track is begging to be sung along to. Brush up on some Welsh before going to see them!

Chloe Star – Happy Place

Release Date: 5th January 2024

Alt-pop is taking more and more steps into the alt-rock arena, back to how it was in the early 00s really, and Chloe Star looks set to take huge steps towards being at the forefront of this. ‘Happy Place’ is her fifth single since descending upon the scene in 2023 and this high-energy track feels like it could be the one that elevates her name. From the opening you can feel the attitude pouring out of Star’s vocals and despite the pop core being strong there is a grungey underbelly that cannot be ignored. Elitists will turn their noses up here, more fool them though.
