New Single Roundup 12th December 2023

Doss – King of the Castle

Release Date: 8th December 2023

British noise makers Doss have had a busy end to the year. Touring the UK and France as well as releasing their invigorating new track ‘King of the Castle’. With their signature Glaswegian accents pouring through, Doss are bringing the energy, as they always do and doing so with a tongue-in-cheek ribbing of those with just a tad too much of an opinion of themselves. You know, those who think they’re the ‘the cream of the crop’.

‘King of the Castle’ is everyone’s new favourite dancefloor bop. So get yourself a beer, head to the pit and find out for yourself that “from their arse the sun does shine”.

Substation – Thunder

Release Date: 1st December 2023

German metal outfit Substation graced us with a new track at the beginning of December and it goes HARD. From the frenetic intro through the huge choruses, ‘Thunder’ barely even relents during the cleaner sections.

Taking aim at those frustrating times when life just gets that bit too much, ‘Thunder’ tells the story of how overwhelming everything can become and the effect that can have on a person. The modern metal track spans almost three and a half minutes of super high energy, riffs and more riffs and a nice variation of vocal styles that gives the track a fresh feel throughout. At no point does it feel stale as new ideas are mere seconds away, all circling around choruses that will have you singing along in no time.

Twat Union – UTI

Release Date: 7th December 2023

A debut single should be the first that most people have heard from a band but Twat Union aren’t really doing things the old-fashioned way. Having already played various gigs and festivals, the band sold out their release show for this single weeks before the gig and are taking their local scene by storm. It’s only a matter of time before their brand of feminist punk takes over the rest of the country and, inevitably the world.

The septet came together due to a mutual love of music and similar interests and beliefs and those beliefs are front and centre in this project, unavoidably blunt and catchy as fuck. With clever lyrics and an infectious outlook, ‘UTI’ and Twat Union are coming for you.

Drömsyra – Manus Inferni Semper

Release Date: 30th November 2023

The latest track from Swedish metal mob Drömsyra dropped at the back end of November and it’s a step up in almost all regards from previous efforts by the band. ‘Manus Inferni Semper’ is the track and it rounds out a strong year for the new Swedes nicely. Or not nicely as the track features raw vocals that when combined with the Latin title and repeated time and time again builds up a pretty haunting feel to the song. Whilst the vocals are heavily based in heavier, borderline death metal, there’s more of a heavy rock vibe going on behind this. A7X and Baroness feel like they may have been the inspiration behind the track, but whatever it is the combination works well and ‘Manus Inferni Semper’ provides a delightful combination of two heavy elements of rock and metal.

Bitch Hawk – ABC of Rock

Release Date: 20th January 2023

Sticking in Sweden for a little while longer, though heading back to the start of the year for this one, Bitch Hawk released a new EP, ABC of Rock, and with it the opening and title track ‘ABC of Rock’. It might be 11 months down the line but for those who missed it, now is your chance to loop back to this high-octane, jazz-infused post-hardcore track. Addictive and unpredictable, Bitch Hawk’s entire philosophy seems to be to keep everything interesting and nothing stagnant, something that this track achieves with almost sublime ease. If you’re looking for music put on loud to escape the day to day, ‘ABC of Rock’ will provide that in spades. Chaotic vocals and explosive guitars. This is huge.
