Scranton’s platinum-selling quintet are back with their seventh studio album Decades. Decades feels like a celebration of Motionless In White’s past and present. Mixing heavy riffs with hardcore synthesisers, it shows the true musical talent of the band and their journey.
‘Afraid of the Dark’ was the first single release, and it’s been a huge hit with fans due to its in-depth lyrics about finding where you belong and gaining strength from the supportive environment of the alternative scene, something a lot of people can resonate with. The use of clean vocals throughout the song really helps to amplify the message of belonging and strength across, a technique also shown in ‘All That I’ve Ever Known’, a song that focuses on the connection between the band and their fans, how sometimes that connection can help either party through a tough time.
There are several large collaborations, including ‘R.I.P.’ featuring American singer-songwriter Skylar Grey. A yearningly beautiful yet possessive ballad about love and the fear of loss. ‘Blood Rave’ features Dark Divine vocalist Anthony Martinez, a pulsing electronic/80s synthwave track that lives up to its song name. Synthwave is echoed through tracks ‘Sunglasses At Night’ and ‘Love At First Bite’, both of which have a rather vampire-esque vibe to them lyrically and through the melody, using familiar gothic melodies and references to vampire behaviour.
It is well known that Motionless In White are the creators of WWE wrestler Rhea Ripley’s theme ‘Demon in Your Dreams’, which opens with the line “this is my brutality” – This is mirrored in ‘Fight Like Hell’ – it could almost be an update to her current theme. ‘Hollywood’, a bonus track on Decades, could be argued to be a development of ‘America’, having a similar yet refreshed melody, and references to Hollywood behaviours like the classic sex and rock ‘n’ roll, and Hollywood celebrities like Tarantino.
‘Playing God’ featuring Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, went viral within a day of its release. It’s a masterclass on ‘Heavy’. Two titans of the metal scene creating a song that truly encapsulates the madness and frustration of knowing someone is trying to purposefully break you down through lies and deception, and not bowing to their pressure, in fact rising above and showing them that you are in charge.
All together, Decades is a celebration of Motionless In White, where they have been and where they may go in the future. A demonstration in music that has and will continue to stand the test of time over several decades.
