Albums of the Year 2021: Will Marshall

1.MØL – Diorama

Where MØL’s debut sat stirring melodies alongside harrowing black metal, Diorama instead marries the two together. The end result is a landmark album in blackgaze; its lush melody lines soar, while vocalist Kim Song Sternkopf experiments with cleanly sung passages on ‘Itinerari’ and there’s a hauntingly beautiful duet with Sylvaine. Diorama builds on the promising foundations of its predecessor as well as drawing heavily on bands that have influenced them like Deafheaven. Examining it from different angles reveals new facets, new textures and sounds. What Sunbather did for the genre in 2012, Diorama has done again. Essential listening.
