Our Nameless Boy: The Fest Shalom Interview

It’s Fest Shalom today and we spoke with Our Nameless Boy about what we can expect from their set…

How will you choose which songs to play live from CFTD?

Pretty much the way we always pick songs, which is by how much fun we’re having playing them in a room together. The big question is how many older songs that we still have fun with will we be dropping? Not even I can answer that yet…

Which bands/artists have most influenced the debut album?

In terms of the songwriting, bands that take a ground up approach have always resonated with me, and they’re always discernible by how they do stripped back or alternative versions, so the likes of Manchester Orchestra, Brand New, The Early November,.. Sonically, we had a very specific brief we wanted to achieve with the album that reflected the lyrical content, but there were definitely certain parts where we had some favoured tunes we used as a reference point, most notably “Julia,..” by mewithoutYou inspired the drum sound and elements of the mix. A slightly quirkier influence was the YouTube channel ‘That Pedal Show’, which massively inspired the way we tracked the guitar for the opener.

How do you think ONB has developed since the release of Safe Bet?

Big question! We’ve gone through a lot of change, challenge and growth in the last 5yrs or so. Although it still rightfully sits as a set contender, I’d like to think we wouldn’t put Safe Bet out now. Whilst it’s a really lean song, I don’t think it’s as lyrically considered as what I aim to do nowadays. Aside from that, we’ve also welcomed 2 babies into the ONB family which have resulted in line up changes which naturally means that something different is going to fall out of us going forward, which in itself is pretty exciting. That’s all I’m saying on that front.

Which band on Fest Shalom are you most excited to watch and why?

Oh jeez, that is so tough because there have been so many amazing BSR releases this year alone! Lastelle and Bryony Williams, mega-excited to hear their songs live, and also ASL just for the feels as I think back to a show we did with them in Bristol a couple of years ago.
