In the first of our new features, we have Phil Marsh from pop-punk mob The Uma talking us through the 10 albums that made him the person he is today.
10: Coming Home – New Found Glory
This album stood out to me its release. I remember picking it up and just being taken away by its brilliance. It was such a different vibe for NFG. Jordan (Pundik)’s vocals are just so warm and play beautifully within every single melody and it really gives me a sense of warmth. It’s an album I like to play around Autumn time. Brilliant record.
9: All Killer No Filler – Sum 41
This album was, for me, about getting through school and dealing with arseholes. It kept me strong. I got bullied so much and music was my go to saviour every time. When All Killer No Filler came out it just spoke to me. The aggression, the delivery and the commercial factor all rolled into one. Kept me grounded through a pretty tough time.
8: The Calling – Camino Palmero
Now as a vocalist I started trying to find my voice at a young age. A lot of singers may find it from, say, day one, others it can take some searching. When I first heard Alex Band it was like someone had slapped me across the face. Such a warm, beautiful delivery and some beautiful songs on Camino Palmero. Now, I never set out to sound like him, obviously, but I knew maybe there was something I could learn from this man and thus that album stayed pretty close to me for a while.
7: Busted – A Present For Everyone
This album was another one that got me through some tough times (my life is a tragedy I’m sorry, haha). Every single track just hypes me up! It would always come with me in my bag along with my portable CD player if I needed a pick me up.
6: Avril Lavigne – Let Go
I’ll keep this one short and sweet: it’s just a killer record!
5: Fall out boy – From Under The Cork Tree
Again just a piece of brilliance! I remember being younger and just vibing off this A LOT! The commercial aspect and the voice of Patrick stump. Awesome.
4: Fightstar- They Liked You Better When You Were Dead
Now, I adore Fightstar, especially the first album, however this came a little bit before. It was the 2005 EP but I’m classing it as an album! It’s raw, it’s beautiful, it’s Emo and that was my vibe.
3: Hawthorne Heights – If Only You Were Lonely
A soundtrack to my college days. Emo. Brilliant. Hard-hitting and emotive.
2: Ozzy Osbourne – No More Tears
Not only is this my 3-year-old daughter’s favourite record it will always be one of mine. It was Ozzy’s best selling record and that’s no surprise! It tackles the 90’s sound with added Ozzy brilliance.
1: Mötley Crue – Dr Feelgood
Picking a Crue album was always going to be hard because I adore Crue! This one just beats Girls Girls Girls for me. A number one album for the Crue with the addition of featured artists such as Steven Tyler mean it really has all the right boxes ticked. I adore this album a lot.
