Gallery: Calexico and Iron & Wine @ De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea 24/11/19

Going back over 14 years, Calexico and Iron & Wine have intermittently intertwined their musical talents, creating heavenly harmonised, one of a kind albums wrapped in an overlay of alternative indie folk americana rock (and many more) genres.

Rewind back to 2005, Sam Beam, Joey Burns and John Convertino first teamed up artistically and released the 7 track wonder ‘In The Reins’ during highs in their careers, taking off on tour and creating a whole new name for themselves and together as one. Finally, after a very patient 14 year wait, Calexico and Iron & Wine schedules tallied up, and their fans finally got to see them come together once again, also with a belter of a new album ‘Years To Burn’.

With Sam Beam naturally taking the lead on stage, he introduced, chatted and interacted with the crowd like I’d never seen before; forget the barriers, the security and any boundaries, he spoke to the crowd as if he were among friends, making it really that much special for us all. With a mix of new and old, collaborations, covers and their own individual backlog, the musicians brought a real variety performance, both Beam and Burns bouncing off each other onstage, admittedly agreeing pre-tour that they would challenge one another – by picking from each others catalogue, what the other would sing.

Either way, I have nothing but praises for the Calexico and Iron & Wine tour, and I really hope the musicians do not feel the need to leave it as long for the next collaboration.
