Dead Inside – Apathy
Smashing out the blocks we have Dead Inside and their track ‘Apathy’. The piercing vocals combined with some chunky riffs make this a song that is perfect for those bad moods where you just want to smash shit up. The American outfit put out their latest music over the last couple of months and have smashed through 5-figures in streams already. A tour with Born Of Osiris will only do good for them too, get in with these guys now!
Dorm Patrol – Knocked Out
Dropping on Thursday, ‘Knocked Out’ by Dorm Patrol is a song that perfectly lives up to the name of the band. It’s a pop punk romp like you loved in the 2000s. ‘Knocked Out’ is a fast paced, fun track that always feels like it draws on common themes for the band and listener alike. Something that all of the best pop-punk bands did and still do. The worry going in is that this is just going to be a glorified cover of so many songs gone by, but that is dispelled quickly as, despite hitting a lot of the checkpoints of the genre, this song feels fresh from start to end. A track for those sunny days with the windows down in the car.
Birthday Boy – Fool’s Paradise
Toning it down a little we have Birthday Boy and the latest effort ‘Fool’s Paradise’. The song is an emotional beast that powers through its 3 and a half minute run time. The chuggy, yet still a bit ‘pop’ like riff that runs through the song hits a sweet spot with the vocals that makes the track an engaging listen, one that you just find yourself going back to again quickly. For a song that isn’t exactly the life of the party, that is no mean feat. This is raw and imperfect and that sends it to another level.
Faux/Fox – Jonah The Doomed
Finally for this episode we have Faux/Fox and their track ‘Jonah The Doomed’. This is another slow and considered track, initially at least. This song is all about the powerful, doom-laden riffs, but the vocals are what elevates those vocals. An oft forgotten element is standout here too, the drumming through the verses is such an integral part of the sound that you think it couldn’t improve, but it just gets better and better as the song goes on. This is a song you could envisage in a small, dark room being played to 20 people, but also being bashed out at a festival in a tent in the rain.
