New Years Day are an American band formed in 2005 from Anaheim, California. The band has released 3 EPs and 3 albums since they formed and have joined bands such as Motionless In White and Escape The Fate on tour. The band is currently formed of Ash Costello on lead vocals, Frankie Sil on bass, Zac Morris on drums, Max Georgiev on lead guitar and Nikki Misery on rhythm guitar.
Diary Of A Creep is the first Ep the band has released since 2014 and will be the first batch of new material, not including their cover of Gangsta, since the release of Malevolence in 2015. The EP is a tribute to all the artists who have helped New Years Day become who they are today featuring Pantera, Linkin Park, No Doubt, Garbage and New Order.
The EP opens with Disgust Me which is a new song the band have produced and was first premiered at Vans Warped Tour in 2017, the song is about wanting to hear the truth from those around you. The band have a definite continuous sound where you know it is New Years Day within the first few seconds of the song. The song has catchy lyrics and an easy beat to get moving to which almost definitely get you moving.
One of the main covers that stuck out for me on the EP was Crawling by Linkin Park, the backbeat of the song comes off more modernised and I’m still unsure as to whether I like it or not. However, Ash’s vocals in this song appear to be the most passionate compared to the other covers on the album. Another great cover is Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order, as someone who isn’t a massive fan of the original I didn’t have high hopes for the cover but I was proven wrong. The drums and guitar in this really made the song a more enjoyable listen for me.
The EP finishes with a cover of Don’t Speak by No Doubt which opens with some piano which gives the vibe this is going to be one of those ‘I’m going to go cry now’ songs but to my surprise we’re given full pelt guitar, bass and drums and especially passionate vocals from Ash. The breakdown in this cover is honestly sick and I cannot flaw it.
The way the whole EP is set out is unexpected but sits well together and the way the covers are done is amazing, if you can get through this whole EP without singing a single word, bopping your head or tapping your knee to the beat then you deserve and award because every cover on here is extremely catchy and easy to listen to.
NYD have really pulled it out the bag and I have high hopes for them in the future. Go give the EP and listen and see what you think, personally I loved the whole EP and have got me to enjoy songs I previously haven’t been able to.
